What is planned giving?

Planned giving is charitable contributions that are part of a donor’s financial or estate plans. It is a way for a donor to continue making a lasting impact for years to come. Additionally, some planned gifts can come with (sometimes large) tax breaks!

A planned gift can be:

  • GIFTS IN A WILL OR TRUST: You can include Shirley’s House of Hope (SHOH) in your will or trust. If you do not have a will, continue reading to learn how to make one for free!
  • BENEFICIARY DESIGNATIONS: assets not covered in your will are called non-probate assets. Examples are 401(k)s, IRAs, life insurance policies, and other accounts. Designating SHOH as a beneficiary can have a big impact and may avoid unwanted taxes for your heirs.
  • STOCKS AND SECURITIES: Many people like donating stock or mutual funds because it may help them avoid paying capital gains taxes.
  • DONOR ADVISED FUNDS: Easily recommend grants to your favorite non-profit organizations (including SHOH!) for tax-efficient giving. Shirley's House of Hope's Tax ID / EIN # is: Tax ID 90-0413125 and our Legal Name is Shirley's House of Hope, Inc.
  • QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTIONS: Use your IRA to make tax-free gifts that benefit you and our mission. At the age of 73, you will be required to take out a distribution. The only way to avoid paying tax is to donate to a 501c3 organization.

FreeWill

A will is important for everyone and can be useful regardless of estate size. It’s a way to support the people and causes important to you. Having a will ensures that your wishes are known, saving your loved ones the stress and cost of intestate probate proceedings. At SHOH we have partnered with FreeWill to give our constituents the opportunity to make a will at no charge. Many of our will-makers choose to leave a portion of their estate to charity, and we hope you'll consider doing the same.

FreeWill is easy to use, accessible online, and can be completed in 20 minutes. You can use this resource on its own, or use it to document your wishes before finalizing your plans with an attorney. CLICK HERE to get started.

Have you already included a gift to SHOH in your will or trust? Please fill out THIS FORM to let us know. We would love to thank you for your generosity!

Do you have an IRA, 401(k), life-insurance policy, or any other assets not included in your will? If so, these are called non-probate assets and you must plan your beneficiaries for them separately. USE THIS ONLINE TOOL to make your plans and designate us as a beneficiary of one or more of these assets.

National Christian Foundation (NCF) Wisconsin

NCF Wisconsin is a non-profit organization that works with donors (and churches / Christian-based charities) to create a giving strategy based on Biblical principles. Donors who create an account with NCF Wisconsin have the option to create a Donor Advised Fund (DAF) that allows them to make gifts to their fund and direct donations to their favorite charities.

At SHOH, we have established a Giving Fund through NCF Wisconsin. To donate to us via NCF Wisconsin, you can either designate grants from your DAF or make donations of non-cash gifts. To do this, NCF Wisconsin will accept your non-cash gift, give you a receipt, sell the assets and pass along the proceeds to us.

Non-cash gifts may include:

  • Stocks, bonds and mutual funds
  • Real estate
  • Business interests
  • Personal property
  • Restricted securities
  • Loan notes
  • 401ks, IRAs or pension plans
  • Life insurance policies
  • Qualified Charitable Distributions
